But when he did, they were pretty good.
"Maybe this is not a popular thing to say but I want to say thank you to President Trump. I mean remember last year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist?"

That was among the few jokes about the president the host made to kick off Hollywood's biggest night.

"There's only one Braveheartin this room and he's not going to unit us either," Kimmel said, before the camera highlighted Mel Gibson.
He urged viewers, instead, to reach out to one person you disagree with and have a positive considerate conversation.
"If you do that, we can all make America great again," he said. "It starts with us."
Later, when basically making Meryl Streep -- who was given a standing ovation during the opening -- blush, Kimmel also mocked how Trump views Streep.

There was also mention of Trump's tweets. Kimmel said the president will likely tweet about political speeches made during the Oscars "in all caps during his 5 a.m. bowel movements tomorrow."
