It also wants be able to produce "finished products and foreign status materials/components."
Business Insiderreports that the product is not for end users, but for Apple's own data centers. Apple used to build servers for its data centers in Oregon and North Carolina on-site, but will now start producing them in its facility at Mesa, Arizona, a source with knowledge of the matter told the outlet. Apple originally purchased the factory in Mesa from sapphire manufacturer GT, which went bankrupt in 2014.
This will not be the first Apple product designed and assembled in the United States. In 2013, the company proudly launched the new Mac Pro with the label "designed and assembled in the U.S.," but it hasn't updated the product since.
The company was also rumored to be planning to bring the manufacturing of the iPhone to the U.S., but those plans haven't materialized yet.
