It's almost International Women's Day,couple invites reluctant stranger eroticism and your Google homepage is ready to celebrate.
To mark the occasion, Google is debuting a new Doodle with a global and cross-generational appeal.
The Doodle — a multi-layered mandala design created by artists Julie Wilkinson and Joyanne Horscrof, and animated by Marion Willam and Daphne Abderhalden — includes a layer for women around the world in the late 1800s, as well as in the 1930s during labor movements.
There's a second layer for women from the 1950s to the 1980s, which a Google representative calls "a landmark era in the wake of pushes for gender equality and rapid changes to the status quo." Finally, the Doodle's outer layer represents women from the 1990s to today, acknowledging 100 years of women's rights movements.
"We drew a lot of inspiration from the history of International Women's Day and its humble roots, showing how the movement has grown exponentially over the years," Wilkinson and Horscrof said in a statement. "We loved the idea of visually representing the number of women involved in each stage, from the Suffragettes to women today, and portraying how their freedoms gradually expanding as the movement has evolved."
Indeed, other things have "grown exponentially over the years," too: Ahead of International Women's Day, Google also released trend data on searches related to International Women's Day and women more broadly.
The findings? Women are on the rise, in more ways than one.
In the U.S., search interest in women's empowerment increased by more than 330 percent since 2004, and search interest in women in tech increased by over 860 percent since 2004.
Google also shared with Mashable some data on the most searched terms in the last year, which also demonstrated a clear interest in empowered women.
Here were the most searched pairings with “First woman to…” in the last 12 months:
Run for president
Win a Nobel Prize
Dunk in the WNBA
Vote
Run the Boston Marathon
And here were the most searched phrases paired with "...women in history":
Famous women in history
Important women in history
Influential women in history
Strong women in history
Powerful women in history
Finally, some powerful women were also popular in Google searches. Some of the most searched women of the year, by profession, were as follows:
Top Athlete: Serena Williams
Top Musician: Taylor Swift
Top Author: Toni Morrison
Top Comedian: Awkwafina
Here's to women everywhere, and the ones you've been searching on Google.
UPDATE: March 8, 2020, 8:46 a.m. PDT: A previous version of this story misspelled the surname of one of the Google Doodle animators. She is Marion Willam, not William.
