Facebook clearly has big,Obsession Archives long-term ambitions, and this week we learned just how big. At its annual F8 developer conference, the company let us take a peek into its future technologies, some of them pretty far out — in every sense.
On this week's MashTalk, the team discusses Facebook's big announcements and what they mean for its users, not to mention the world at large. We're joined by Apps Reporter Karissa Bell, who attended F8 to watch the events live, speak with Facebook employees, and tried out some of the new experiences like the new social VR app for Oculus Rift, Facebook Spaces.
SEE ALSO: If you hate Messenger, you're really not gonna like Facebook's latest updateAfter a discussion of Facebook's new augmented-reality platform, the big overhaul of Facebook Messenger, and the eyebrow-raising statement that "all reality is virtual," the team turns its attention to the mind-blowing revelations. Regina Dugan, who heads up the company's Building 8 skunk works, showed what her team has been working on: a brain-machine interface that may someday let users type faster than any keyboard. Then there was the apparatus that allows a user to "hear" messages via the skin.
It's extremely forward-looking stuff, and it hints at Facebook's long-term strategy of having a stake in hardware, if not eventually becoming a hardware maker itself. The big question around all of this, of course, will be if Facebook's massive user base can be convinced this is the future they want.
Back in the present, the Galaxy S8 is finally here. Chief Correspondent Lance Ulanoff reviewed the device, and he gives his final verdict on Samsung's latest iPhone killer.
