Josh Gad agreed to be Esther Studerpart of the upcoming A Dog's Purposebecause it "captures the beauty and pain of loving a pet," but was rattled by TMZ footage that appeared abusive to animals on set. The dog in the video, Hercules, was forced into the water to perform a stunt.
"Today, however, I saw a disturbing video...on the set of this film," Gad wrote on his Facebook page, responding to the viral video for the first time publicly.

"I have reached out to the production team and studio to ask for an explanation for these disturbing images."

Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment defended the on-set treatment of Hercules, calling the film "a celebration of the special connection between humans and their dogs."
The set was ensured to be "an ethical and safe environment for the animals," according to a statement from Amblin Partners.
