LONDON -- When a girl at school told 6-year-old Lex that her autistic brother Frank was weird,"Some Girls" movie eroticized she was left feeling upset and confused.
When Lex tried to explain that her older brother had autism, the girl didn't understand what she meant.
Having recently joined the student council, Lex decided to write a letter to address the lack of awareness of autism at her school in the south of England.
Her mother, Sophie Camilleri, posted the message to Facebook, where it has since gone viral:
The letter reads:
“On Monday I felt very sad because a girl in my class said that my brother was weird.
“My brother has autism and is not weird and I would like it if we could learn about all disabilities in schools so that everybody understands that some people are different, but we should all be treated the same.”
Camilleri told BuzzFeed News, “The teacher of Lex’s class asked if anyone knew what autism was. Not one child knew what it was.”
By sharing Lex's message online, Camilleri hoped to bolster local efforts to raise awareness for disabilities. To her surprise, the letter has now been shared more than 27,000 times on Facebook.
Good work, Lex!
